Frequently Asked Questions / FAQ

Hi There!

General Questions

What can I do here?

layer_5

You can browse, view creative content, explore the blockchains, interact with others, keep collections and add your own creations to the river!

Most importantly you can play! Styx is intended as a gaming experience.

It’s possible to make posts, pages and even software! Later on it will be possible to become a vendor and turn your creations into products.

The experience is “gamified”, so members may progress in experience and levels, pick classes and progress over time simply by interacting with content on the website.

Please keep in mind that most content requires you to register for a free account!

What is Styx?

...carpe noctem

Styx is a combination of Apps & dApps that in combination create a “digital river” of unique storytelling, narrative, artistic and gameplay content that “evolves” with your progress. Using Web1 + 2 + 3 technology, creators may keep full ownership of their content and data. You can find out more about the technical specifications here.

What is the state of development?

Testing Core

We are currently in Open Beta.

You can find out more about the current version and its features in the Tavern aswell as older entries in the Dev Diary section.

Who can participate?

rune_circle_2

Currently sign ups are open for subscribers and readers. We are also taking applications for content creators from the digital arts, coders, cryptoartists, authors and 3D-modellers. We do regular curation and screenings to make sure the “house stays clean”. We do not allow political content of any kind.

Furthermore we are looking for active beta testers.
You can find out more on our Discord!

What are the minimum Requirements?

Styx-tabularsa

You only need an account on Styx, a Browser compatible with Metamask (Chrome, Mozilla and Brave at the moment) and the extension or add-on properly installed.

In order to post and add content your soul will need to be either unbound or whitelisted.

Does it cost anything?

manacite1

Currently there are no costs for subscribers and creators.
We wish to keep Styx free to use without having to rely on direct advertising.

Sign up is voluntary and completely free.

You can login either with an E-Mail or via Web3 Wallet.

I am completely lost. What do I do?

If you really have no idea how to proceed, if something is broken or if you require technical assistance proceed here and our team will take care of you! There’s also the Knowledge Base which continously gets filled with lore, terms and features you may encounter during your travels along the river.

How is my content attributed?

You get to choose how you wish your content to behave. You can assign Data attribution based on CC tags if you wish for your content to be freely shareable or whether you want add a “lock” to content if you wish to keep it private or limit the number of views / interactions / downloads. Your data and content is yours. Immutably.

The software behind it is called Eidos!

You may also read more about Data Attribution in our dedicated section.

Do I and my data remain anonymous?

As a member and creator it is up to you whether you want your personal information attached to your content! You may choose to remain anonymous to the public or not as long as your content fulfils our terms of service.

However, for legal and technical reasons, the site admins keep a record of users as registration is required. We will never ask you to divulge your personal information to the public.

Your data is everything but anonymous. It is in fact **immutable** (one of the key aspects of blockchain technology). Via Styx, content is mirrored on the blockchain so your content receives a unique “digital fingerprint” which allows the content to be tracked, traded and attributed across the internet.

Later on it will be possible for members to apply to become a Vendor to trade your digital goods. If you wish to become a vendor you will need to supply information about yourself and your store to the public.

Can I test my Content/NFTs/Tokens before going live?

Absolutely, you can give a your creations a try in the test network of your preference using the Soulforge. Before minting you can also save a draft of your item before finalising it. When you are ready, you can deploy your contracts to the main networks.

Technical Questions

What Blockchains is Styx connected to?

Styx utilizes aspects of the Ethereum, EOS, Hive, BSC and Polygon blockchains along with its own database and API which is routed via Infura.io.

The Ethereum capabilities are used to create NFT and ERC20 tokens along with the main data attribution & verification systems. The EOS Blockchain keeps a record of all posts, pages and content along with when Data was edited and how the content change. BAT serves as a compatible utility token as we hold verified creator status by Brave.

What is a Blockchain?

Blockchain is a growing list of records, called blocks, which are linked using cryptography. Blockchains which are readable by the public are widely used by cryptocurrencies.

Originally developed as the accounting method for the virtual currency Bitcoin, blockchains, which use what’s known as Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT), are appearing in a variety of commercial applications today.

Currently, the technology is primarily used to verify transactions within digital currencies. Though it is possible to digitize, code and insert practically any document into the Blockchain. Doing so creates an indelible record that cannot be changed;

furthermore, the record’s authenticity can be verified by the entire community using the Blockchain instead of a single centralized authority.

What is a Block?

block is a container data structure. In the Bitcoin world, blocks contain records of transactions allowing it to be used as a form of transfer or currency. Thus a block is like a page of a ledger or record book. Each time a block is ‘completed’, it gives way to the next block in the Blockchain. A block is thus a permanent store of records which, once written, cannot be altered or removed.

What is an ERC-20 Token

ERC-20 is a standard that implements a token interface. That allow to store, receive and transfer units of value (tokens). A token can be a cryptocurrency a certificate of property or any representation of value.

What is WordPress?

WordPress is the most popular and flexible content management system in the world. Our modded version is called WISP and is the underlying CMS system for Styx content fitted for interacting with Smart Contracts in a novel way.

On Styx, WISP manifests itself as the Waterfall.

Is WordPress a secure platform to interact with Smart Contracts?

WordPress is the most popular CMS in the world, and for the same reason is a target for exploits and attacks of every kind. If you know what you are doing WordPress can be a really secure platform. But to protect the users, Styx and its blockchain features never touch your private keys. All this work is handled by Metamask/Web3 browser extension. Which is a very reputable wallet-tool in the market that allows you to safely interact with smart contracts.

Are my Private Keys safe?

Yes, STYX and Nyx Labs never touch your private keys. They are safely stored in your Metamask/Web3, which is a very reputable wallet-tool in the market that allows you to safely interact with smart contracts.

Ethereum is the leader in smart contracts platforms and is really strong and secure, but using a smart contract that hasn’t been properly tested and audited can compromise your project and your funds. On Styx we use only community audited smart contracts that have been proven to be trustworthy and safe.

What is Ethereum Mining?

Ethereum Mining is the gathering of ETH via the validation of network transactions. Your mine generates a certain Hashrate which participates and aids in all activity on the Ethereum Blockchain.

Generally speaking, by mining you improve the speed and stability of the entire network. The Ethereum network is so versatile because it is generated in a decentralised fashion.

Ethereum will however soon move from being a “Proof of Work” to a “Proof of Stake” mechanism.

What is a GPU?

graphics processing unit (GPU) or “Graphics Card”, is a specialized electronic circuit designed to rapidly manipulate and alter memory to accelerate the creation of images in a frame buffer intended for output to a display device. GPUs are used in embedded systems, mobile phones, personal computers, workstations, game consoles and as the main outputter of processing power for Ethereum based blockchains.

Modern GPUs are very efficient at manipulating computer graphics and image processing, and their highly parallel structure makes them more efficient than general-purpose CPUs for algorithms where the processing of large blocks of data is done in parallel.

In a personal computer, a GPU can be present on a video card, or it can be embedded on the motherboard or—in certain CPUs—on the CPU die.

Is Nyx-Labs or Styx a mining operation?

No.

Styx software uses a “decentralised Proof of Stake” system.
It’s all software-based so mining isn’t necessary.

In the future we may have our own hardware in order to provide dedicated nodes.
